In times of societal upheaval, people seek creative forms of protest. Right-wing populist parties influence the social climate, threaten rights, and divide society. The project Aufblühen gegen Rechts (Bloom Against the Right) combines the symbolic power of the marigold with a political statement against the right-wing shift. The marigold – a symbol of healing, joy of life, and hope – is transformed through guerrilla gardening into a symbol of resistance. With seed bombs, it is intended to bloom in public spaces and send a message for diversity and democracy. Protests with flowers have a long tradition, such as the Carnation Revolution, the White Rose, or the Color Revolutions. This tradition demonstrates how plants can convey not only beauty but also a strong message. Inspired by Morgan O’Hara’s The Introvert’s Protest, Aufblühen gegen Rechts provides space for quiet but powerful protest, offering introverted individuals the opportunity to participate.
The marigold was chosen for several reasons:
Visually, the project was inspired by typographic protest posters from the 1960s. The typeface used is Garibaldi by Vocal Type, which was inspired by anti-fascist material during World War II.
